Comments

The Port Phillip Crown Lands District was officially split into two Crown Lands Districts on 1 July 1840. These were the Portland Bay District and the Western Port District. The whole area was still referred to as the Port Phillip District of New South Wales until separation from New South Wales as the Colony of Victoria in 1851.
Gisborne had resigned due to ill health and probably anticipating the change. He was replaced by Powlett, who began in the role on 1 June 1840. Fyans was appointed to Portland Bay from 2 May 1840.
