Comments

The existing Police Magistrates were re-appointed as of 1 January 1853 under new legislation. Gazetted dates vary and Blue Book 1853 has this as the appointment date, though in later issues it reverted to the original appointment dates (including pre-Separation).
I have gone with the Colony of Victoria dates. Most of the existing Commissioners of Crown Lands were appointed Police Magistrates, retaining their (now unpaid) Crown Lands duties.

Notes
01 McLachlan was gazetted to fill in for Shadforth at Castlemaine and BB1853 has this as his Sandhurst appointment date. Later issues have 28/29 March 1853.
02 According to BB1853, Smythe had begun a leave of absence as GC and CCL at the beginning of March to return to England, but was appointed PM of Benalla for the month of March at full pay. He died on 15 May before leaving the colony.
