Comments

The majority of existing Police Magistrates were appointed (unpaid) Commissioners of Crown Lands on 30 June 1862 under the terms of the new Land Act 1862. It is uncertain how long this lasted as they are not identified as such in the Blue Books. 18 Police Inspectors and a Crown Bailiff were similarly appointed (unpaid) Commissioners of Crown Lands under the same legislation in July 1863 – and again not listed in the Blue Books, so it is possible that they replaced those appointed in 1862.
