Notes
The family was resident at the Brompton Ordnance Barracks.
Find a Grave and some family trees on Ancestry have 29 July 1824 without a source. 29 September 1824 is from Geni, again without a source. This latter date makes more sense, though, as he claimed to be 22 years and 2 months old in November 1846, when he reported his marriage to the army. His 1891 obituary says that he was born in Jersey, but the 1851 UK Census has Brompton, Kent.

The passenger list has a "Captain Carey, lady and child." Carey had three children, but it is possible that two stayed in England with his wife's family, as the youngest - John Le Marchant Carey (junior) - died in Falmouth in 1856.
It would appear that John and Charlotte did not divorce. After returning to England, Charlotte is "married" in the 1871 and 1881 UK Census, but "widow" in the 1891 UK Census, even though John died in November, 1891 - eight months later.
Between March and November 1868.
